George Louis Jones was born to the late John L. Jones and Julia Chapman Jones on February 8, 1939 in Talladega, Alabama. He relocated to Hamilton, Ohio in his early years. Through school he was involved in track and field with his focus on Shot Put. George’s first job was at a bowling alley. He graduated from Hamilton High School.
After High School his love for cars lead him to working at a car lot. He then found a career at Armco Steel (AK Steel) working his way up to a Forman where he retired after working 30 plus years. After retirement he went on to work driving cargo vans transporting cars for auctions for 20 years until he retired again. He truly believed II Thessalonians 3:10, ‘If you don’t work you shouldn’t eat.’ He was a man’s man that walked tall in independence.
George married Leatha Pruitt on July 22, 1960. To this union was born Annette, Dwayne, Rodney, and Demetra. Their marriage was later dissolved almost 10 years later. He remarried Delores Jackson and to this union was born Darwin Jones; and after nearly 30 years their marriage dissolved. George also helped to raise and was a loving father figure to Darnell, Adrian, and Dorinda Jackson. He was a very proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
George accepted Christ and later began teaching adult Sunday School at his church, Isreal Baptist where he served as a faithful member. Serving on the Usher Board and also taking trips with the youth as he loved to be around the children as I‘m sure his grandchildren and great grandchildren can attest. He was instrumental in securing school scholarships for his great grandchildren.
George was an advocate for promotion of his church and made sure to give and donate to the cause of his church. He was truly an outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing trips with his sons, family, and friends, hunting, riding his motorcycle, and playing cards with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was known as Tex Man by his church members due to his hat collection and as we all know he truly was a man of many hats.
George loved his family. He was so determined to be with family that he moved across the street from his first wife, Leatha. In the end, when George’s home caught on fire, it was she that was there with her son, Rodney, his wife, and grandchildren, standing in the driveway praying for his safe passage out of the fire. George was proceeded in death by his brother, John W. Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his children; Annette Bratton, Dwayne Jones (Ora), Rodney Jones, Sr. (Daphne), Demetra Jones, Darwin Jones, Darnell (Tiffany) Jackson, Adrian (Susan) Jackson,
and Dorinda Jackson; grandchildren, Angela Slaughter (Kevin), Rodney Jones, Jr., Leah Jones-Finklea (Evan), Roscoe Bratton, Isaac Jones (Cassandra), Carlos Ware; 13 great grandchildren; Isyss Slaughter, Blake Jones, Reggie Davis, Aleyah Jones, Skyye Slaughter, Daviyon Finklea, Rodney Jones, III, Damarion Finklea, Leiana Jones, Knox Ware, Lovely Finklea, Isaac Jones, Jr., and Roman Jones; family traveling buddies; Craig Lumpkin, Alfred Holifield, and his 91 year old cousin/sister, Mary Thompkins aka “Little Bit”; as well as host of family and friend
